On Sunday afternoon I hopped up to Gloucester for a visit with Debbie. It was a last minute trip, so I'm glad it all worked out. Debbie was on the hunt for a ceramic "home" for this thing they call the mother- I can't explain what it is, but check the link for the official wikipedia terms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_of_vinegar Something about vinegar and red wine.... one of her foodie friends brought it back from Greece. I thought it looked like an embryonic sack, but in a brave moment, I tasted it... and it certainly didn't taste the way it looked. Well, Debbie found what she was looking for- or at least someone who could make it for her. We stopped in one of the local pottery artist's studios. The woman there makes some incredible things and for the life of me, I can't remember her name. She spins her pottery on the wheel... vases, cups, little dishes, bowls, honey jars... you name it... she makes it. and it's beautiful.
We went for a wonderful lunch at Latitude 43- one of the new trendy restaurants in town. I know, trendy in gloucester...what??? Gloucester is such a quirky, artsy, old, laid back town... the restaurant seemed out of place. The food was delicious and the view was super. There was a salt water fish tank inside that I could sit in front of and watch for hours.
After lunch we scoped out the docks to see if anyone was pulling anything out of the water. I guess the fish weren't biting... but one car did have a bunch of fish on ice that they had caught earlier. I can't imagine what it's like to pull a fish that big out of the water. I'm waiting for the day I catch the big one...
