VCU Brandcenter has a new building and it's very cool. It's open. Colorful. Textured. Free. It makes me happy.
I was thinking, what is it about these types of spaces that make us think better? or is it just a bunch of bologna?
I think I'm lucky. My thoughts flow freely whether I'm stuck in traffic on the highway, waiting in line at the bank, or sitting in some very cool oversized cushy chair in an airy room with cool windows and doors and colors.
It's nice to look at. It's nice to be surrounded by it. But I'm not sure whether it helps my creativity.
I see it like this: If you think about museums, they're simple, white, clean. It's the perfect environment to showcase the classic beauty of a masterpiece, or to quietly display a bold contemporary piece. An agency or school is like an exhibit, but it's the entire package that's on display. It's not only the work, it's the people behind the work and the culture that's on display.
So, perhaps a cool space is more for the spectator?
I'll take a cool space over a cramped environment any day, but my thoughts might be the same if I were in either location.
